Two heads are better than one: How to find the right partner for the right project

Many hands make light work. Sound familiar? Collaboration is as old as time, from the days we hunted together to survive to today, when collaboration has taken on new meaning. We are no longer only searching within our own industries for the right partners, but are expanding our horizons and reaching out to governments, different sectors, destinations, associations... Ivo J. Franschitz, Owner & Managing Director, ENITED and Nonnie Kubeka, Head of Gauteng Convention and Events Bureau, gives a rundown of what their 2019 ICCA AMP session taught delegates about this topic we all seek to learn more about.

1. What did your session topic cover?

We live in a world of collaboration, a key element for any successful business model and venture, today and tomorrow. The business events industry is very good in forming collaborations and partnerships out of necessity, to fulfil the demand side of our market and to deliver the necessary products and services. However, we could do much better in initiating those collaborations and partnerships out of opportunity, to establish market differentiators, and to create new market demand and opportunities.

2. Which main challenges did the session address and attempt to solve?

To understand and realise those collaborations and partnerships out of opportunity, we need to step out of our “daily routine”, leave our “safe” place and comfort zone (“silos”) and dare to think beyond and ahead, regardless of our job description and skills.

3. What are the 3 main lessons you hope delegates learnt?

By means of 3 examples of possible collaboration areas and partners, we hope that the delegates:

  • Have become more aware and open for those opportunities
  • Will dare to step up and out of their daily job perspective
  • Will start to recognise and grasp those potential collaborations and partnerships.

4. How can these lessons inspire them to go further in their professional lives? How should someone implement this advice back at the office?

There is no such thing as a “cookie-cutter” recipe. Both for the inspiration and possible implementation of new thinking and ideas, it needs the right kind of personality, who is willing and able to take a certain owner- and leadership for such a topic in his or her business/job environment.

5. Do you recommend any educational resources that our delegates and readers can refer to if they’re interested in learning more about your session topic or area of expertise in general?

Of course, there are many, general knowledge and learning resources on this topic, as well as a good number of models (structure and process) for how to achieve and guide those collaborations. However, each industry and sector has its own specific rules and forms of engagement. Hence, it is first and foremost a matter of common business sense, industry experience and, above all, readiness to take risks, to create those successful collaborations and partnerships of opportunity.
