Night of the Microbes – the winning legacy programme
International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME) won the Incredible Impacts Award with their “Night of the Microbes” legacy project that they implemented with their meeting in Leipzig in 2017. The challenges that ISME faced were:
- microbial biology is a niche science, and
- the wider population is unaware of the importance of the research as well as recent advances.
So they tried to come up with a fun and engaging way to create awareness of the public and educate them.
ISME, together with their LOC and Leipzig community support, organised the “Night of the Microbes” - an education event that brought the “hottest” science concepts and research results to the public in a casual atmosphere along with music, German beer and a nice time together.

What is ISME planning to use their USD 7,500 grant for?
In Leipzig the LOC was gracious and fortunate enough to waive their LOC budget and use it for this public event. However, next time they are taking their meeting to Africa and their LOC will need all the funding they can get. They got so inspired by this initiative that would love to organise a similar event for local children, and ISME is planning to use their grant money to help them set this up.
