Soroptimist International - Winner of the Incredible Impacts 2020 Award

Soroptimist International winning legacy programme

The Soroptimist International (SI) won the Incredible Impacts Award with their legacy programme for the 2019 Convention in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The objectives they were seeking to achieve were
  • access to clean water and sanitation,
  • quality education, and
  • food security
for women and girls.SI held a session during the convention to raise the issue and addressed it for two communities in Malaysia in the post-convention legacy project.
With the support of the region, SI organised organised local water management committees that would ensure access to the clean water and sanitation, and encouraged villagers, particularly women, to participate in all phases of the project.
Through education partnerships, SI gave 5 local girls the opportunity to graduate with a welding diploma and contribute to the construction of the rainwater harvesting system. With the support of skilled contractors, they upgraded the existing dam and installed clean water systems, that provided 3300 people with access to safe water.
They also educated women in hygiene, sanitation, water conservation, as well as organic farming techniques and fundamentals of marketing, distribution and transporting of their produce, which resulted in establishing 295 local organic farms.

SI Legacy Programme at a glance

What is SI planning to use their USD 7,500 grant for?

Soroptimist International would use the grant to extend the legacy programme in Malaysia to part-fund a similar project in another isolated community that does not have access to clean water and safe sanitation.
