Be Engaged at Penang's First Business Events Conference

George Town, Penang: Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) is proud to announce that we are organising our inaugural industry engagement conference Business Events @ Penang, or BE @ Penang. Themed BE ENGAGED, the conference will take place on 6 & 7 December 2016 at The Wembley, Penang.

The first in a series of education and skill sharing programming by PCEB, BE @ Penang will serve as catalyst for the Bureau and the industry’s collective effort in developing Penang into a matured and competitive Business Events destination, especially Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition (MICE).

Business Events is a key component of Business Tourism, which sees the average business traveller spending an average of RM7000 compared to RM2000 spent by the leisure traveller.

According to Pemandu, the tourism industry is a significant contributor to Malaysia’s GDP, maintaining an average growth rate of 12% per annum since 2004, and the agency has identified the establishment of Malaysia as a major business tourism destination by 2020 with the GNI of RM3,947 million as one of components of the National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs).

In its latest report, Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) estimates the economic impact of Business Events supported in Malaysia for 2015 stands at RM7.6 billion.

The progression of Penang as an important secondary city in the Malaysian Business Events sector is taking place parallel with the development of infrastructure in the state. The construction of Penang's first exhibition and convention centre (sPICE) and the unexpected proposal by a private company to build a second one indicates that Penang can be a favoured destination for the MICE sector in Malaysia.

With the upgrading of the Subterranean Penang International Convention & Exhibition Centre (SPICE), which is estimated to be completed in Q1 of 2017, and the slated The Light Waterfront Convention Centre (estimated completion: 2022), Penang will be able to host Business Events of larger scales, and multiple events at one time. At present Penang is able to host events of 10,000 delegates and above as seen in the 15,000-delegates conference that was held at SPICE in May this year.

As of 31st Dec 2015, Penang has 197 registered hotels. In terms of room capacity, Penang is foreseeing additional 9 hotels by 2018 that would contribute approximately 3000 rooms per night to the existing 13000 rooms registered under the MAH Penang Chapter.

In terms of incentive and unique meetings offerings, Penang’s latest development at KOMTAR offers Business Events delegates truly cosmopolitan experiences in addition to the vibrant cultural and heritage that Penang is famous for. Having completely revamped the KOMTAR district, The Top offers unmatched meeting experiences with venues such as the Rainbow Skywalk that comes with a spectacular view of Penang up in the sky, and a Banquet Hall that can accommodate 800 guests and is equipped with a state of the art LED backdrop.

For incentives and meetings in the nature, Penang has The Habitat Penang Hill and Tropical Spice Garden that offer exhilarating eco-packages. From the acclaimed Cooking School and award winning spice garden to guided tours and performance space on Penang Hill, Penang is fast becoming a favourite eco-meetings destination.

The future for Business Events in Penang is looking positive, and thus PCEB believes that the Penang Business Events industry must come together to realise common goals, validate them and progress together towards a matured Business Events destination. Penang is fast rising as a key secondary city destination in the region, and with a unified Business Events industry, Penang as a state would stand to benefit from the economic impact of Business Events.

Headlining the conference is the Keynote Speaker Noor Ahmad Hamid, the Regional Director of ICCA Asia Pacific. ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) is the leading authority in the global community and knowledge hub for the international association meetings industry.

BE @ Penang 2016 also brings together prominent figures from the Malaysian and regional Business Events industry, namely Alun Jones of MACEOS; WaiKin Wong of MyCEB; Oh Kin Tat of ?Putrajaya International Convention Centre; Datuk Koe Peng Kang of S P Setia Berhad; Karen Yue of TTG Media Group, and many more.

Even though this is the first time PCEB, which will only be 11 months old when the conference commences, is organising such an event, we are proud to have the support of the Business Events industry.
