KUALA LUMPUR, 8 December 2016 – Over 30 business events industry professionals were treated to an interactive and experiential tour of Asia’s one and only AIPC (International Association of Congress Centres) Gold Standard Venue, as well as an immersion into Malaysia’s multi-cultural heritage, during their visit to the country for the 55th ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) Congress. Themed ‘Gathering of the ICCA Global Tribes’, the congress was held in Kuching, Sarawak, from 13 to 16 November 2016.
After an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the purpose-built Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre), the attendees enjoyed the soothing sounds of gamelan (traditional Malay orchestra) before trying their hand at some of Malaysia’s rich traditional arts and craft. Besides the gamelan, batik and henna painting, and Chinese calligraphy, were laid on for the visitors to experience.
“The annual ICCA Congress provided the perfect opportunity for us to showcase Malaysia’s growing business events proposition by inviting the trade media, meeting planners, venues and convention bureaus from around the world to enjoy our interactive and experiential facility tour and share in knowledge exchange.
“It was excellent to see such a great response, with venues and bureaus from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Australia, Japan, Switzerland, Tanzania, Germany, Abu Dhabi and United Kingdom attending the site visits,” explained Alan Pryor, the Centre’s General Manager.
Alan continued, “We hope the participants enjoyed the experience and gained insights into both Malaysia as a destination and into our offerings as a venue, particularly our differentiated propositions in product innovation and culinary excellence. The visit had the added benefit of allowing our team to share and discuss best practices and industry trends with global meeting professionals and the learnings will surely benefit our clients.”
Praising the Centre’s efforts in hosting the site visits, Stephen Lewis, Publisher, CAT Publications, said “You (the Centre) clearly have a highly motivated team at KLCC and the smiling ‘can-do’ enthusiastic attitude will clearly impress international convention planners who make destination and venue choices for their events.”
Jonas Scharf, Managing Director Congress Center Basel, expressed “The visit was great, you couldn't have done better! Great team! The food was gorgeous! Thank you very much!” Echoing Jonas’ comments, Tesa Chikaponya, Executive Director Destination Marketing, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, said “A very big thank you to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. It has been great, what an awesome facility and staff. I love how well-maintained the venue is. It’s as if it was built a year ago.”
The Centre’s site visits were part of a series of initiatives undertaken by the venue to support Team Malaysia and the Local Organising Committee’s efforts in delivering a truly memorable Malaysian experience and contributing to the legacy of the ICCA Congress being held in Sarawak.
“We wish to congratulate all our industry colleagues and the Local Organising Committee in Kuching, Sarawak on the professional delivery of a truly memorable ICCA Congress in Malaysia,” concluded Alan.
