KUALA LUMPUR, Monday 26 March 2018: Malaysia was unanimously chosen as the host for Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress (APAO) 2021 to be held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 4 – 7 March 2021. Held annually, the APAO Congress is the largest and most prestigious Ophthalmology conference in the Asia Pacific region.

Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia joined by the Malaysian Society of Ophthalmologist (MSO) will be given the honour to further promote the science of ophthalmology in the region.

A total of 4,500 delegates is expected to be present during the four-day congress following a collaboration bid by MyCEB and MSO at Hong Kong on 11 February 2018. The congress attracts top eye doctors from all over the world to discuss the latest advancements in the field that will greatly benefit the medical section and the general public in Malaysia.

“We are thrilled to form a strong partnership with MSO to host this engaging and important congress, convening highly-regarded delegates comprising of ophthalmologists, professors, researchers and healthcare practitioners. APAO 2021 is projected to boost Malaysian economy by RM67.9 million in estimated economic impact and maximise Malaysia’s growth potential as a knowledge and creative economy,” said Datuk Zulkefli Hj. Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia.

“This congress provides an ideal platform for our local experts to gain valuable insights and share best practices from their international counterparts, while at the same time allows us to showcase Malaysia’s credibility as a business events hub and an ideal tourism destination,” he further added.

Bringing together ophthalmologists from around the world, APAO 2021 is committed in fostering co-operation between ophthalmological societies in different countries and collaborating with other international or regional organisations with similar aims.

About MyCEB

MyCEB was established in 2009 by Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia to further strengthen Malaysia’s business tourism brand and position for the international business events market. A non-profit organisation, MyCEB serves as a central hub to assist meeting and event planners to bid for and stage international business events in Malaysia and act as a conduit for national product development. MyCEB’s goal is to improve its rankings as an international meetings destination within International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) and to grow business tourism arrivals to Malaysia.

In December 2016, MyCEB mapped out the way forward for Malaysia in business events with the launch of ‘Malaysia’s Business Events Roadmap: Charting Malaysia’s Journey to 2020 and Beyond’. In helping to power Malaysia’s knowledge and creative economy, the business events roadmap will lay the groundwork, set up and manage the platforms for collaboration and support the development of strong local hosts.

Malaysia Major Events, previously known as International Events Unit (IEU) is another division of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB). It focuses on identifying and supporting major event bids for sports, arts, lifestyle and entertainment events. It also assists home grown and home hosted events as well as other cluster events that strengthen Malaysia’s global appeal as an international avenue for major events.
