Utrecht key conference city on the world conference ranking

The annual statistics announced by ICCA (International Congress & Convention Association) today show that Utrecht has retained its position as the fourth most popular conference city in the Netherlands. They also reveal that the Netherlands is again in the top 10 of international conference destinations.

Quality mark for international conferences

ICCA is a Dutch organization that has achieved the international quality mark for international academic conferences. It only registers conferences that associations organize on a regular basis, that have a minimum of 50 delegates and that rotate between a minimum of three different countries. In 2017, a total of 56 multi-day international conferences, with an economic value of more than €17 million, were organized in Utrecht.

A popular conference destination

Utrecht has been a popular conference destination for years now for a number of reasons, including its high concentration of knowledge institutions and its young, well-educated population. Conference organizers are very satisfied with Utrecht. 'Utrecht was a logical choice for us; the city is centrally located and is easily accessible', reflects Rob Verhoeven, senior researcher at the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organisation (Integraal Kankercentrum Nederland). The city of Utrecht was his first choice when organizing the 39th International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR) conference in 2017. 'This authentic and historic city, with its friendly and hospitable atmosphere, helped to enhance delegates' experience of the conference too.’

Economic impact

Conferences are of huge economic importance to the city and the region. 'Multi-day, international conferences have high economic value and delegates attending international conferences spend approximately €400 per day,' says Monique André de la Porte, Account Manager at the Utrecht Convention Bureau. 'In the years ahead, we expect to see a significant increase in the number of national and international conferences and we are focusing acquisition activities on conferences that are in keeping with the city's most important focus areas.' To facilitate this growth, hotel capacity in the city will increase by approximately 1,000 rooms to more than 3,000 hotel rooms.

The Utrecht Convention Bureau

The Utrecht Convention Bureau (UCB) is part of Utrecht Marketing and is a one-stop shop for organizers of national and international meetings, conferences and other business gatherings. The UCB offers free, independent and expert advice about the possibilities that Utrecht has to offer for business events. It also provides conference and event organizers with information about marketing and promotion, financial aspects and/or conference grants and offers help with tendering procedures, site inspections and FAM trips.
