Hear first-hand from Péter Kakucska, ECSS Congress & PR Events Manager about the value of joining the ICCA Association Community.
The European College of Sport Science (ECSS) is one of the first associations that joined ICCA as soon as the announcement that it would be welcoming associations into the ICCA community. The ECSS had always been a long-standing supporter of ICCA and now that we are officially included was a natural progression.
The ECSS has been providing the international sport and exercise science community an annual congress for 24 years, that has grown to one of the larger congresses in the meetings industry. Climbing to over 3,000 delegates recently, we are aware that we must remain relevant in the research area and also the meetings industry. The ECSS would like to not only attract large numbers of delegates to their congresses, but also to bring the congress to new populations of less visited geographic regions.
Recently, we have faced challenges in the meetings industry, many shared with other associations; membership retention, acquisition, providing cutting edge events, digitalisation and remaining relevant. Preparing for the unknown is also a challenge, so having contingency plans are critical.
ICCA has been pivotal in providing various levels and ways of support and has been able to help mitigate these concerns. We have taken part in many of their educational opportunities which have provided top instructors, relevant topics and interactive formats. Last year, we took advantage of the Association Expert Seminar in Frankfurt and we came away with new ideas and broadened horizons.
We regular use ICCA’s Meetings Resource publications in our day-to-day work. With the diversity in the meeting’s industry and differing business models that venues operate on, ICCA’s publications offer excellent information and research analysis. Amongst the many publications, we often use;
- ICCA Destination Comparison Tool
- Global Destination Sustainability Index
- The International Association Meetings Market 2018
- Personal Meetings ROI Handbook
When it comes to the bidding process itself, ICCA provides support and top-class resources from the beginning to the end of the event cycle. Some of those that we recommend are;
- Receive bids from ICCA members
- Review your bid manual
- International association meetings: bidding and decision-making
- Contracting with major congress & convention venues.
ICCA also provides manuals and guidelines for working with various stakeholders in the meetings industry, be that, “Negotiating with hotels”, “Working with airlines and ground transport operators”, “Working with convention bureaux” and “Working with Meetings Management Companies”.
We sometimes think that we are the only association that is facing a particular problem or that we need to validate some of the assumptions in the meetings industry. ICCA has provided for us many networking opportunities to meet with fellow organisers. In any region of the world, in any sector of the meetings industry, ICCA provides premium interactive opportunities and networking possibilities. The association targeted events have been popular with the ECSS.
To those new associations or the those considering signing up to ICCA, we can recommend taking advantage of the ICCA Hosted Buyers programme. These are tailor made programmes aimed to bring businesses together and to introduce you to many stakeholders and potential partners.
We look forward to other associations joining ICCA and taking advantage of the benefits and support that they can offer. Who knows, maybe we meet at one of their events and can share experiences and make the association business grow stronger.
