When was your association founded?
Where is your association based, how many members do you have & in how many countries?
IABSE is based in Switzerland, with approximately 3,000 members from 100 countries.
Who are your members?
Engineering students, qualified structural engineers and organisations with appropriate structural engineering interests, such as universities, construction companies, libraries and public authorities.
What is your mission & aim of the association?
The aim of the Association is to exchange knowledge and to advance the practice of structural engineering worldwide in the service of the profession and society.
What are the major challenges facing your association?
Shrinking membership due to advancement of technology where information and networking is readily available for free in the internet.
What kind of events are organised by your association?
Mid-year Conferences, Symposium in Spring and Congress in autumn.
What is the decision process behind the selection of a destination/venue?
Distribute our events by continent, country and national group’s initiative.
Can you share your insights about the latest trends within the association community?
Going digital and paperless. Modern and interactive events.
What does your association do in terms of legacy, do your meetings have a societal impact on the destination?
In general, we connect people, professions, and communities around the world especially in every destination we go.
Are you looking to forge collaborations with other associations? If so in what areas of expertise?
Yes, we opened our Task Groups also to non-members and from other profession.
