The African Federation for Sexual Health and Rights (AFSHR) was established in June 2002, as an outcome of meeting in Pretoria, South Africa where sexual and reproductive health advocates and organizations from across Africa met. The primary mandate of AFSHR is to advance sexual health and rights on the Africa continent through knowledge management specifically by convening the Africa Conference on Sexual Health and Rights. AFSHR has done this through a partnership model that enables the host organization take significant responsibility for the conference including securing partnership with the host government whilst AFSHR holds the convening right and oversight for the conference.
