As ICCA has already announced it will return to its regular Country - and City - rankings for the 2022 statistics publication, which will be available in May of this year, it’s an opportune time to reflect on the state of digitalisation in the Association Meetings Industry.

ICCA would also like to present an infographic based on virtual events held in the years 2020, 2021 and the preliminary numbers for 2022 (as of January 2023), in order to visualise the trend.

The overall conclusion is that the number of virtual events showed an expected steep increase in the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 - in order to maintain business continuation - followed by a sharp decrease due to global lifting of COVID-restrictions in 2022.

Even though hybrid events will most likely remain as a consequence of the pandemic, full-on digitalisation seems to have been a virtual bump in the road.
